Even the famed Storyville photographer E. J. Bellocq plays a small but crucial role. Perhaps, though, the most vivid character in the novel is the city of New Orleans itself, with its otherworldly. At her place, a woman would want to offer tea, ask me to sleep over. I wasn't a complete prick. I had always been as open to a relationship as anyone. I just hadn't yet met a woman who made me want to skip a night in my own bed. The women I'd met all introduced themselves to me, knew who I was, knew who it was they thought they wanted.

Bellocq is a mysterious figure in the history of photography. His photographs did not become well-recognized until nineteen years after his death, and little is known about his life or his creative intentions. Active as a commercial photographer in the 1910s, he made at least eighty-nine portraits of prostitutes in a brothel in Storyville.

Few photographic series can generate as much critical discussion and conflicted response as E. J. Bellocq’s shots of Louisiana prostitutes. Taken between 1911 and 1913 in Storyville, the red-light. The book of poems was inspired by photographs taken by New Orleans photographer, E.J. Bellocq. When Bellocq died in 1949, 89 glass plate negatives were found in his desk.
